Authentic Greek Tzatziki Recipe
Some recipes don’t belong to one country, they belong to an entire region. Growing up in a Mediterranean family, this cool cucumber yogurt dip appeared beside grilled meats, roasted vegetables, warm pita and even simple rice dishes.
Whether someone called it Greek tzatziki, a cucumber yogurt sauce, or simply yogurt with cucumber and garlic, every family seemed convinced theirs was the authentic version. That’s exactly why I love it.
Instead of chasing perfection, I celebrate the ingredients themselves. Thick creamy yogurt, crisp cucumber, fragrant dill, fresh garlic and bright lemon combine into something wonderfully refreshing with very little effort. The flavors stay clean, recognizable and beautifully balanced.

Fresh Cucumber Yogurt Dip
This Authentic Greek Tzatziki Recipe has become one of my favorite warm-weather staples. I spread it onto sandwiches, spoon it over grilled chicken, serve it alongside seafood fresh from the Chesapeake Bay, and often enjoy it simply with garden vegetables straight from the backyard.
Sometimes the oldest recipes survive because they never needed improving.

Fresh Cucumber Yogurt Dip Turned Into a Salad
Why This Authentic Greek Tzatziki Recipe Stands the Test of Time
There are few sauces more refreshing on a warm day than a bowl of cool, creamy Tzatziki. This beloved cucumber yogurt recipe is a simple marriage of strained yogurt, fresh cucumber, garlic, olive oil, and herbs, ingredients that come together to create one of the Mediterranean’s most iconic flavors.
Fresh Ingredients Do All the Work
Unlike many dips that rely on heavy seasoning, tzatziki celebrates just a handful of fresh ingredients. Each one contributes its own flavor without overpowering the others.
More Than Just a Dip
While many people think of tzatziki as a party dip, it also works beautifully as a sandwich spread, salad dressing, grilled meat sauce or accompaniment to roasted vegetables.
Naturally Healthy
Greek yogurt provides protein while cucumber adds freshness and crunch. Together they create a light Mediterranean sauce that’s satisfying without feeling heavy.
Ingredients and Tools You’ll Need
Authentic Greek Tzatziki Recipe Is Made with Homemade Yogurt or Good Quality Commercial Yogurt
Thick Greek Yogurt – The foundation of authentic tzatziki. Choose full-fat Greek yogurt for the richest texture, although lower-fat versions also work well. If you are adventurous, make your own!
Fresh Cucumber – English cucumbers are my favorite because they contain fewer seeds and thinner skin. If you have garden fresh cucumbers simply remove the center strip of seeds.
Fresh Garlic – One clove creates gentle flavor while two cloves give the sauce the bold Mediterranean character many people love.
Fresh Mint or Dill – Fresh mint or dill adds brightness that dried herbs simply can’t match. Homegrown dill, parsley or mint, even in windowsill pots, make lovely variations.
Lemon Juice – Fresh lemon wakes up every ingredient while balancing the richness of the yogurt.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil – A drizzle adds silkiness and authentic Mediterranean flavor.
Salt and Fresh Ground Pepper – Simple seasonings allow the fresh ingredients to shine.

Simple Tools for Making Tzatziki
- Cutting Board – A sturdy cutting board gives you a safe surface for preparing your herbs, and cucumber.
- Chopping Knife – A sharp chopping knife makes quick work of preparing the cucumbers and fresh herbs so their flavor distributes evenly throughout the sauce.
- Measuring Tools – Simple measuring spoons and cups help balance the ingredients so the tangy yogurt, fresh Lemon, and seasonings stay perfectly in harmony.
- Spoon – A sturdy spoon is all you need to mix everything together once the ingredients are prepared.
- Mixing Bowl – A medium mixing bowl gives you enough room to combine the creamy Greek yogurt, grated Cucumber, herbs, and seasonings.
- Citrus Press – A citrus press makes it easy to extract fresh juice from your lemon while keeping seeds out of the sauce.
- Garlic Press – Using a garlic press helps finely crush the Garlic, allowing its flavor to blend smoothly into the yogurt without biting into a piece of garlic.

How to Make Authentic Greek Tzatziki
Here is the easy step-by-step instructions for making this tzatziki recipe (print-friendly below).
- If using Greek yogurt that is already thick then your yogurt is ready. If using plain yogurt of any brand, it will need to be strained. Simply place cheesecloth, or a thin kitchen sack towel over a bowl, place the yogurt in the cloth, tie the ends of the cloth and elevate slightly so that the watery substance in the yogurt and drip out for at least an hour, leaving a thick Greek-style yogurt.
- Prepare the cucumbers by slicing them open (long-ways), cut out the center strip of seeds, chop the cucumbers into small chunks, place in a bowl and lightly sprinkle with salt. Leave this in the refrigerator while the yogurt strains, or at least 30-minutes.
- In a bowl, whisk the lemon juice and zest along with olive oil, garlic, and chopped herbs. Fold in the yogurt, and with a slotted spoon lift out the cucumbers from the bowl they are in (without the liquid), and fold them into the mixture. Chill and serve.

What To Serve Tzatziki Cucumber Yogurt With

- Grape Leaves, stuffed with different variations for everyone, and perfect to dip in tzatziki.
- Lamb Chops, that cook in under 15-minutes or low and slow, fall-off-the-bone Lamb Shanks that can simmer all afternoon.
- While we’re serving grape leaves, why not indulge in my Roasted Fish in a Fig Leaf and enjoy the real beauty of Mediterranean meal.
- For a truly healthy vegetable spread, serve tzatziki alongside of my Millet Tabbouleh, a gluten-free twist on the classic tabbouleh.
- What would a meze spread be without bread? Flatbread Pita bread or a classic Turkish Simit bread are exactly what you will want to serve!

Greek Cucumber Yogurt Tzatziki On Television
Authentic Mediterranean Tzatziki here in America? I can’t think of a better place to showcase an authentic recipe than on TELEVISION! Yep!
I had the most exciting opportunity to make my tzatziki recipe while cooking on Guy’s Grocery Games!
The show aired August 14, 2019 and was called Grandma Grocery Games, sometimes found on YouTube Season 20 Episode 24.

I made my recipe for tzatziki to be served as a refreshing side salad to go along with a Kofta on Pita bread that I made.
While the kofta was met with a few crazy challenges, the judges raved about my authentic tzatziki recipe. I am elated to share my Mediterranean Tzatziki recipe with you here!

Deconstructed Tzatziki Cucumber Appetizers
As is the whim of any creative culinary artist, we like to play with our food! And so I couldn’t let you leave without my version of a deconstructed tzatziki appetizer.
With the ingredients that go into tzatziki – Greek yogurt, lemon zest, garlic and a drizzle of olive oil – make this mixture and whisk in a bit of mascarpone, or goat chevre cheese.
Slice the cucumbers with the skins on, place on a platter, a dollop of the tzatziki yogurt mixture in the center of each slice, an edible flower in the center (I have used borage from my garden) and a thin chive across the tops. Easy to serve on a Meze table!
Authentic Greek Tzatziki Recipe
Equipment
- Cutting board and knife
- Airtight container
Ingredients
- 2 cups Greek yogurt or homemade yogurt drained to thicken
- 1 1/2 cups Cucumber skin on, seeds removed, cubed
- 2 tbsp Mint finely chopped, extra for garnish
- 2 Garlic cloves crushed
- 2 tbsp Lemon juice about 2 lemons
- 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
- 1 tbsp Olive oil more for final drizzle
Instructions
- If using Greek yogurt, which is already thick, you do not need to strain it. If using homemade yogurt or other type of yogurt, strain the yogurt with cheesecloth over a bowl for 30-minutes to an hour, which drains the watery aspect of yogurt and retains the thick texture of yogurt. This step can be done days in advance.
- Place the cubed slices of cucumber in a large bowl and sprinkle with a little salt. Allow to sit 10-minutes, toss, then drain off the liquid from the cucumbers.
- In a medium bowl, add the lemon juice, zest, olive oil and chipped mint and toss. Add the cucumbers and yogurt. Taste for salt. Chill and serve.
