The earthy flavor of Black Rice and Black Beans with hot chilies and smoked salt, make this a perfect hot dish for a crisp night!

Fast, easy and ready when you are.


Yields 4 – 6 servings

  • 2 cups Black Rice
  • 2 cups Black Beans
  • 2 cups of a mirepoix (onions, celery, and carrots, chopped)
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon smoked salt
  • 3 Thai chilies, chopped, or ¼ teaspoon dried
  • 2 tablespoons dried herbs – oregano, thyme, rosemary
  • 10 cups water



Bring water to a boil in a large pot. Toss in all the ingredients. Bring back to a boil. Lower, cover, and simmer for an hour. Puree a cup or so of the beans and rice soup, and return it to the soup to thicken it. That’s it!

Serve with a dollop of Avocado Cream.

Avocado Cream Ingredients

  • 1 soft avocado
  • 1 ½ cups mascarpone
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Salt to taste


Toss the ingredients into a blender, or simply mash with a fork, and you have a delicious dollop for the soup, or schemer it on a piece of crusty bread!
